Veterinary Team

Alex Simpson, DVM, Medical Director

Dr. Alex Simpson has been a valued employee of Shawnee Animal Hospital since he started working on the staff in his early teens. After pursuing his dream of becoming a veterinarian, he returned to Shawnee Animal Hospital to serve the area’s animals with expert, loving care. Dr. Simpson enjoys all aspects of working at a mixed animal practice, but he especially loves working with large animals.

During his studies at Oklahoma State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Simpson worked on world-renowned Thoroughbred stud farms in Ireland. The rest of his family currently lives in Prague where they raise and race Thoroughbred racehorses.

Jim Coffey, DVM

Dr. Jim Coffey graduated from Oklahoma State University with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2016 and joined the clinical team at Shawnee Animal Hospital in January 2019 as an associate veterinarian. Dr. Coffey has professional interests in surgical care and large animal services, specifically those working with bovine and equine.
 
Originally from Kansas, Dr. Coffey spent time in Arkansas and Texas before making Oklahoma his home. He has a menagerie of pets including, six dogs, three cats, five horses, and two sheep. Although Dr. Coffey loves all his pets, he has a soft spot for the Gordon Setter large breed of dog. His rescue dog, Deek, is a three-legged Gordon Setter who was injured in a hunting accident with his previous owners. After Deek’s surgery, Dr. Coffey adopted him and the two have been best friends ever since. In addition to caring for animals, Dr. Coffey enjoys eating and spending free time with his family and friends.

Gail Loman, Surgical Supervisor

Gail started working at Shawnee Animal Hospital in 2005. She was the salutatorian of her 2004 graduating class in Maud, Oklahoma. Gail also earned her Associates Degree in Life Sciences from Seminole State College, and studied Animal Science at Oklahoma State University. Her favorite hobbies are watching movies, playing video games, horseback riding, and spending time with friends. Gail enjoys caring for the great variety of animals at Shawnee Animal Hospital.

Laura Atkinson, Vet Assistant

Laura has worked at Shawnee as a Large Animal Assistant for over 10 years. She was born in New York, where she began working with large animals when she was just 11-years-old. Laura lives on a farm with her husband and 7-year-old son Jacob, raising registered cattle and barrel racing horses. Laura enjoys barrel racing, fishing, spending time with her family, and taking care of her animals.

Jillynn Hoffman, Vet Assistant

Jillynn has worked with Shawnee Animal Hospital since 2016 as a Certified Vet Assistant. She has been around all kinds of animals all her life. Jillynn was born in Texas and move to Oklahoma in 2017. She also showed Boer goats and horse when she was in high school. She has a 7 year old daughter BryAnna (Bree). She enjoys caring for animals as if they were her own. Her hobbies are fishing, trail riding, spending time with her daughter and family, and spending time her animals.

Taylor King, Vet Assistant

Taylor was born and raised in Shawnee, OK and has been working at Shawnee Animal Hospital on and off since 2013. She attended the University of Oklahoma and graduated in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in biology. Her desire is to pursue a career working with animals, in whatever capacity that may be, and loves working with all the animals that comes through Shawnee Animal Hospital. She is pet parent to her American Bully, Titan, who will always be her baby, but who now has to share mom with his little human sister, Savannah. Taylor is open to the possibility of one day going back to school to become a vet but for now enjoys being part of the team in caring for the Shawnee Animal Hospital clients.

Billie Joe Sing, Kennel Staff

Billie Jo has worked at Shawnee Animal Hospital since 2011. She was born in Shawnee and grew up in Macomb, Oklahoma. Raised on a small farm, Billie Jo has always been an animal lover. Now she lives on that farm with her boyfriend and numerous animal companions. Her favorite hobbies are trail riding, ranch sorting, reading, hunting, running, and working out at the gym or on the farm. In 2007, she graduated from the Purcell Horseshoeing School and has worked part-time as a farrier since. Billie Jo enjoys caring for animals of all shapes and sizes, and she treats every animal as it it were her own.

Kim Haney, Receptionist

Kim started working for Shawnee Animal Hospital in November of 2017, but has been a client here since 1999 along with her family. She graduated from Tecumseh High School in 2012 and went on to Seminole State College where she graduated with her associates degree in 2014. In 2017, she graduated from St. Gregory’s University with a degree in Natural Science. She has 2 horses and previously barrel raced on one of which has an NBHA Oklahoma State Championship, and the other who has qualified and made to the finals of NBHA world championships. She also has 3 dogs and a 4 year old little boy who all like to keep her busy and on her toes.

Becky Bell, Receptionist

Becky started working for Shawnee Animal Hospital in 2012. She grew up in Arizona and moved to Oklahoma in 1998, where she has been a client of Shawnee Animal Hospital since. Now she works at Shawnee to provide exceptional care for the community’s animals. Becky is married and has two wonderful children. She is continuing to further her education in business administration and management. In her spare time, she enjoys riding.

Jami Mathis, Receptionist

Jami started working at Shawnee Animal Hospital in 2015. She has loved animals all her life and loves working with them on a daily basis at Shawnee. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends. Jami went to Wetumka High School and plans to pursue a college degree.

Donna Fish, Receptionist

Donna has worked in the nursing care business as an administrator for a number of years and serves on the Meeker Roundup Club in various positions. Donna and her husband Gerald own a horse farm and raise miniature Australian Shepherds. Animals bring joy to her and her family.
