Large Animal Wellness Care

Routine wellness procedures such as deworming, vaccinations, and dental care are also critical to the health of horses. At your annual wellness exam, our doctors will check the body condition, mouth, teeth, coat, and musculoskeletal system of the patient, as well as test for parasites and offer advice for prevention.

Wellness Exams

Shawnee Animal Hospital - Large Animal Wellness Exams

Based on the physical examination, we may suggest further bloodwork or a fecal sample. Some important information we may ask for will include the date of the horse’s last deworming, the number of other horses on the farm, whether your horse frequently travels off the farm, and what feed your horse regularly consumes.

Whether your horse is a competitor or a companion, preventing illness and lameness will ensure that you are able to spend more time in the saddle, and that you and your horse will be able to have a long and healthy relationship.

At Shawnee Animal Hospital, we make both house calls to assist with wellness procedures, and also have stalls in our facility for more in-depth procedures, and emergency services.

Dentistry

Shawnee Animal Hospital - Large Animal Dental Services

Dental health is a central component of overall equine wellness. Having healthy teeth allows your horse to feed better, perform better, and live longer. The teeth of the modern horse are often used to chewing more grain than their strictly grazing ancestors did. This can cause the teeth to develop sharp points, which in the past would have been worn down by more roughage, that can cut the tongue or gums.

Other common equine dental problems can include:

  • Discomfort or pain caused by the bit
  • Overly long, or overly worn teeth
  • Tooth loss or pain
  • Misalignment of the teeth
  • Infection
  • Irregularities of the teeth

Pain caused by dental issues can have a domino effect, leading to behavioral issues, mouth ulcers, erratic head movement when the bit is in the mouth, and more.

We recommend annual dental exams for horses to treat or prevent these dental conditions. It is important to pay special attention to the teeth between the ages of 2-5, when horses’ teeth are undergoing the greatest changes.

Equine Farrier

Our farrier services provide high-quality hoof-trimming and shoeing to horse owners in the Shawnee community.

Our farriers combine the tactical, craftsman-like skills of a blacksmith with the veterinary knowledge of anatomy in order to effectively protect and maintain hoof health. A skilled farrier knows that only half of their job is shoeing horses; because horse hoofs are always changing and growing, trimming the hoof to the proper proportions is also critical. Also, because the hoof is the outer covering of a the sensitive and complex anatomy of the foot, utmost precision and technical knowledge must be practiced for the safety of the animal.

Beyond traditional horseshoes, we are also equipped to apply modern advancements to showing, such as glue-on horseshoes.
